Prince George’s and Princess Elizabeth’s name have been announced as the new royal couple, joining Prince Andrew and Princess Anne, whose parents are Prince Charles and Diana, who were named after their respective fathers.
Both of the first names of the newlyweds were born on May 1, 1947, and both are named for the country they represent.
The name of Prince George is also pronounced the same as Prince George, and the name of Princess Elizabeth is pronounced the similar as Elizabeth, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
The other new names are Darlene and Darlan.
“The couple are named to honor the great and enduring partnership of their parents,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.
“In the meantime, the U, S and D will be known as the ‘family’ as we continue to serve and protect our country and our people.”
The couple’s new name is the culmination of a yearlong process.
In 2016, the department of homeland security gave the royal couple the new name after an extensive public consultation process.
The department announced in 2016 that it would begin accepting applications for the new names, and that the process would take six to eight months.
It is the first time the department has offered names in a naming contest.
The official name of the couple’s family is the British family of Princess Anne and Prince Philip, who wed in 1954.
The new names will not be used in official government documents or public services, the Department said.
The government has been looking for a new name for decades, and it began looking for an alternative name when the government adopted a new identity for itself, according for 2016.
The couple, who have been married for seven years, have been the subject of several public protests.
Earlier this month, Prince Charles expressed concern over the name change and said the family was not interested in being “unpredictable.”
He also called on the public to “not be afraid to ask questions.”
“We have been very clear to our friends and family about the fact that we are a family and that we have a history of having a very strong relationship with the United Kingdom,” Prince Charles said.
“We want to do everything we can to make sure that that legacy lives on.”
The U.K. government has offered the names to the public for consideration.
“For a time, we looked at the name that was on the ballot in the United States,” a spokesperson for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport told ABC News.
“But it was not on the government ballot for a couple of reasons.
One, it had to be changed in the run-up to the referendum because of the name-change issue.
Two, because we had a number of other people who had suggested names, we were concerned that we might have to change them too.”
In 2017, a similar consultation was held to determine if the names should be used.
The decision was unanimous, with only three dissenting votes.
The UK government said the public should have a voice in how it names its royals, and there is a “strong presumption” that names will be used for the public good.
